Relations between Iran and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have been strained for years. Now, several incidents in the Persian Gulf are putting additional strain on the relationship between the two countries.

Iran accuses the Emirates of attacking Iranian fishing vessels. Conversely, the Iranian Coast Guard confiscated a UAE ship in Iranian territorial waters. Both incidents are said to have occurred last Monday.

In the attack by the UAE coast guard on the fishing ships, two fishermen were killed and the others arrested, reported the Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs then summoned the charge of the UAE embassy. Tehran sharply condemn the attack.

According to the report, the Abu Dhabi government regretted the attack, released the fishermen and turned over the fishing vessels and bodies to the Iranian side. In addition, the Emirates agreed to pay damages.

IRIB also reported that a UAE ship was arrested by the Iranian coast guard on Monday for entering Iranian territorial waters. All crew members have been arrested and investigations have been started against the ship, it said without further details.

The fragile relations between Iran and the UAE were further strained last week with the normalization of relations between Abu Dhabi and Israel. Iran's President Hassan Rouhani even threatened the UAE with consequences. "If the UAE is toying with the idea of giving Israel access to the region (on the Persian Gulf), it will be against them," said Rohani.

Iran's relations with the UAE are strained following the attack by Iranian protesters on the Saudi embassy in Tehran in 2016. Iran has not recognized the sovereignty of the Israeli state since the Islamic revolution of 1979. Tehran regards the country as its archenemy and has threatened the destruction of Israel several times.
