When they noticed that a couple was in danger of drowning in the Isar, the Freising slackline professional Lukas Irmler and his specialist helped immediately - with their equipment.

Freising / Munich - They were guardian angels: had it not been for Lukas Irmler from Freising and his specialist Sören Arlt, a couple from Munich would have drowned in the Isar. Luckily Irmler and Arlt happened to be slacklining. Without thinking too much, they saved two lives (MM Bayern reported).

A lucky coincidence

"It was a lucky coincidence that we were there," said Irmler in an interview with FT. As has been the case recently, he had stretched a slackline over the Isar at the Luitpold Bridge in Munich on Wednesday afternoon. The 30-year-old is a slackline professional. He recently set a new world record in Russia when he balanced for 55 minutes over a canyon while blindfolded. The fact that Irmler and his friend Arlt can accurately assess their abilities and handle their equipment in the best possible way gave the rescue workers valuable minutes.

On Wednesday afternoon, a woman from Munich slipped and fell into the raging river when she wanted to cool her feet. Her boyfriend rushed after trying to hold her. The two drifted through the water roller and further downstream. At the Maximilianswerk they managed to hold on to a tiny protrusion of the wall. “I don't understand how you did it. There was actually nothing to hold on to, ”says Irmler. This is where he and Arlt came in. “We didn't even notice anything about the accident,” says Irmler. But suddenly passers-by ran up to her and made her aware of it.

Slackline equipment saves lives

Then everything happened very quickly. “What we had to do was completely logical,” says Irmler. “We just grabbed the slings that we ourselves often use to climb trees and secure ourselves,” says Freising. Without further ado, they let the tapes into the water. The couple managed to put their legs through the slings and stay afloat until the fire department was on site. “Fortunately, that went very quickly,” remembers Irmler. Nevertheless, the two had to wait a few minutes in the 13 degree cold water. What would have happened without the quick action of the slackliners, you don't want to think up at all.

When Irmler and Arlt are back on the slackline shortly afterwards, they only realize what has just happened. At first he was not really aware of the drama of the situation, says Irmler. “Only when the fire brigade said that it was a brief story did it slowly come to us.” Your advantage: As slackline professionals, the two of them are used to keeping a cool head and full concentration even in extreme situations. These traits saved lives this Wednesday.

Slackline association founded

In order to better network slackliners from Munich and the surrounding area, Irmler and Arlt recently founded their own association. “We want to strengthen the community and secure our places in the city on a permanent basis. The sport should just become a bit more present, ”explains the 30-year-old. Interested parties can find information on Facebook in the Slackline München e. V.

A major search was recently carried out in Freising and the surrounding area: Apparently a person had fallen into the Isar. But not only the raging river is dangerous. In Neufahrn, rescue workers were able to get a 19-year-old out of the water after a swimming accident in Mühlsee - but the man died a little later in the hospital. A man did not return from swimming in a lake near Weichering: companions alert the water watch - but any help comes too late.
