Ambassador Al-Jaafari pointed out that the Turkish occupation forces used water as a weapon against civilians and deprived more than a million civilians from the city of Hasakah and its environs of drinking water by deliberately and repeatedly for more than 15 times and for many days cutting off drinking water for them from the Alouk station and the wells feeding it. For his part, Guterres said that he is aware of the situation in Al-Hasakah and that he has assigned the United Nations team in Syria and its special envoy Geir Pedersen “to do what is necessary to address this issue and ensure its urgent solution and the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected until the pumping station in Alouk is restarted,” explaining that he can imagine the situation In light of the severe heat and the absence of drinking water.

Guterres added that this problem must be resolved urgently and that he will make every effort immediately with the Turkish government and other parties and through his representatives on the ground to ensure pressure to resolve the issue as soon as possible. He will also assign his special envoy Pedersen to work to address this issue through his meeting with representatives of the United States and Russia. Turkey is in Geneva next Monday on the sidelines of the constitutional debate committee meetings.
