Demonstrations erupted in the U.S. city of Wisconsin after police opened fire on an unarmed black man. In response, authorities imposed a curfew in the city. The wounded, Jacob Blake, was taken to hospital yesterday (Sunday) in critical condition, after being shot many times. According to social media reports, residents who arrived at the scene threw bricks and Molotov cocktails at police officers.

A video posted on social media shows a man walking towards a car, followed by two policemen. One of them shot at him as he opened the car door. An eyewitness said he had a child in the car at the time of the shooting. The shooting occurred around 5 p.m., when police responded to a call about a "family incident." According to Kanusha police, the wounded man was immediately taken to hospital. No further details were given as to what led to the shooting.

The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced today that police officers involved in the shooting have been taken on leave, and that the state's criminal investigation unit has opened an investigation into the shooting. She said she would formulate a report for the lawsuit within 30 days.

"We oppose the use of excessive force and automatic escalation when it comes to blacks in Wisconsin," tweeted Gov. Tony Everest.

After the shooting, angry residents gathered at the scene and set fires in protest of the incident. The protesters marched in the streets and threw bricks and threw Molotov cocktails at the police. One of them, according to reports, was injured. In response, police announced a curfew across the city until 7 p.m.

This incident happened while protests over the killing of George Floyd across the United States had not yet died down. Floyd was killed on May 25 after a white cop in Minneapolis put his knee on his neck for nearly nine minutes. The event ignited stormy demonstrations across the country against violence and racism by the police and the justice system against blacks.
