In a statement, US Foreign Minister Mike Pompeo expressed Washington's " deep concern " over the poisoning thesis put forward by German doctors after his transfer from Russia to Germany where he is hospitalized, in the coma.
" If this is true, the United States supports the European Union's call for a full investigation and is ready to support such an effort, " he added. " The family of Mr. Navalny and the Russian people deserve a full and transparent investigation, and that those responsible are accountable ", he continued, wishing a " total recovery " to the opponent.
An immediate "necessary" investigation
A little earlier, the American ambassador to Moscow, John Sullivan, had estimated that the assertions of the German doctors made " necessary an immediate, complete and transparent investigation on the part of the Russian authorities ", according to his remarks quoted on Twitter by his door - spoken by Rebecca Ross. Mr. Sullivan also called for "to hold accountable the parties which are behind this act ".
Visiting Moscow on Tuesday, the number two in American diplomacy, Stephen Biegun, also said he was " deeply concerned " by the state of health of Mr. Navalny and by " the impact on Russian civil society " of his suspected poisoning. He stressed " the importance of transparency and freedom of expression in any democratic society ," said Ross.
The Kremlin ruled on Tuesday hasty the conclusions of German doctors who estimated that Alexeï Navalny had been poisoned, ensuring that it was " one track among others ". The opponent remains immersed in an artificial coma, in serious condition even if his life is not in danger. After becoming unwell on a plane, he was first hospitalized in Siberia before being transferred to the Charité hospital in Berlin.
