The US Treasury Department announced on August 25 that it would sanction a Chinese citizen for allegedly smuggling the opioid drug fentanyl into the United States.

The Ministry of Finance statement stated that the sanctioned person was Taotao Zhang (Taotao Zhang), a pharmacist and a supplier of chemical raw materials. Authorities alleged that he was suspected of falsely reporting the contents of the package, using multiple people and logistics companies to send fentanyl to the United States. After the local coupler received the package, the criminals usually took one kilogram of fentanyl and refined it into one million fake pills, which were then distributed and sold to the demolition house.

In addition to Zhang Taotao on the sanctions list, Allyrise Technology Group Co, Limited, where he is a director, has also been sanctioned. According to documents from the U.S. Department of the Treasury, the company’s address is located on Fa Yuen Street, Mong Kok. In the commercial building, the authorities alleged that Zhang Taotao used the company to cover the transaction.

The action was carried out jointly by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) under the Department of the Treasury, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney and the Drug Enforcement Administration. According to the sanctions, the property and interests of the persons and companies involved in the United States will be frozen, and Americans are prohibited from having any transactions or dealings with them.

Fentanyl is a cheap opioid pain reliever, but it is 50 times more effective than heroin. US officials have pointed out that China is the source of illegal fentanyl. President Donald Trump once criticized Chinese President Xi Jinping for not doing his best. Prevent fentanyl from flowing into the United States, but Beijing denies this claim.
