(CNN Spanish) - Ecuador will not renew the state of exception due to the coronavirus pandemic, which ends in mid-September, as reported this Wednesday by the Minister of Government, María Paula Romo. In a tweet, the official explained that the decision is due to a provision of the Constitutional Court. "After this 30-day period of renewal of the state of exception, the Constitutional Court will not admit a new declaration on the same facts," the judges stated in their ruling.
The court's ruling established that upon termination of the exception, the national government must coordinate with all national and sectional authorities the necessary and adequate measures to face the health crisis "using ordinary tools."
Speaking to Radio Quito, Romo anticipated that from now on the control of the pandemic will have to be based on ordinary decisions. He pointed out that, consequently, exceptional measures such as the curfew or restrictions on the right of free association will end when this period of state of exception ends, which will be between September 12 or 13. He warned that neither the emergency nor the controls have ended but that from that moment on, most of the responsibility will fall on citizens with self-care measures.
The first time the state of exception was declared due to public calamity in the country was on March 16, and President Lenín Moreno renewed it for the last time on August 14, for a period of 30 days.
On Wednesday the Ministry of Public Health confirmed 110,549 cases of coronavirus and 6,410 deaths.
