Polanski and the Oscars, it's over, confirms the court

The Franco-Polish filmmaker had taken legal action against his exclusion from the prestigious academy in 2018. The Los Angeles court rejected his request on Tuesday, ruling his ousting “founded”.

The divorce is therefore recorded between Roman Polanski and the Oscars. A Californian judge dismissed the 87-year-old filmmaker on Tuesday, who had taken legal action against his exclusion from the prestigious academy.

This legal setback marks a further step in Hollywood's distancing from the Franco-Polish director, who fled the United States four decades ago after pleading guilty to hijacking a minor. Magistrate Mary Strobel, who sits in a Los Angeles court, said in her decision that Mr. Polanski's exclusion from the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences "was justified." It was "motivated by evidence" and "was not a whim or arbitrariness" , added the judge.

On May 3, 2018, the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Cinema, which awards the Oscars and has more than 7,000 members, announced the exclusion of Roman Polanski at the same time as that of actor Bill Cosby, convicted of sexual assault . The decision had been sent by mail the same day to the director, "with immediate effect" . Roman Polanski was awarded the Oscar for best director for The Pianist in 2003.

This time his history with the Oscars is definitely over, unlike that with the Caesars. Last February, the filmmaker won the award for best director for J'accuse, once again fueling controversy around his person and his work.

Polanski wanted "to be heard"

The director, who turned 87 last week and who saw his star clearly fade with the #MeToo movement, argued in his summons that the Academy should have given him "reasonable notice" before any exclusion, and “a reasonable chance to be heard” .

He had pleaded guilty in 1977 to hijacking a minor for having had illegal sex with Samantha Geimer, then 13 years old.

This single count retained was the result of an agreement negotiated with the justice, after Mr. Polanski was initially charged with more serious counts, in particular rape of a minor under the influence of narcotics. Samantha Geimer, who has already explained to have forgiven the director, had supported him in his readmission process.
