The huge garden of the St. Albert Kindergarten in Freimann is a dream for the next generation and a rarity in Munich. 50 children between the ages of three and six are still romping around here. But how long?

  • The kindergarten with the huge garden is a paradise.
  • The St. Albert kindergarten in the Freimann district of Munich is about to end after 90 years.
  • There's a problem and it's worse than ever. Not an isolated case in Munich.

Munich - After 90 years, the St. Albert day care center in Freimann is threatened with extinction . You lack staff. Not an isolated case in Munich *! Four teachers look after the children at St. Albert. Two positions have been advertised for over six months. “The positions could be filled immediately, but so far there have only been a handful of applicants,” says director Angela Scheuerer. "We had personnel problems before, but it was never as bad as it is now." None of the applicants was a trained educator.

Time is of the essence, the manager will be retiring this spring. Deputy boss Suyin Majthenyi hopes that at least one position can be filled by then. “Otherwise we would have to close the daycare center,” she says. “It is always the children who suffer from the lack of staff.” In the current situation, events and excursions are out of the question.

Munich: Children's paradise before the end - "A rethink must take place"

“There has to be a rethink,” says Angela Scheuerer. "The money for day-care centers is there and new ones are constantly being built," says the director. “But who should look after the children?” 12.3 percent of all positions in urban day-care centers are vacant. In some cases, institutions have to reduce opening times. By 2023, there will be a shortage of around 30,000 skilled workers in crèches, kindergartens and after-school care centers in Bavaria.

Lack of staff is a problem

There are also big problems in St. Albert when one of the teachers falls ill. “We can not afford an illness at all, because we have in the back of our minds which problems an absence triggers,” says Suyin Majthenyi. “The personnel situation makes you sick in the long run.” In addition, the psychological pressure increases. “In many cases this ends in burnout. So the joy of the job is lost. ”After all, the wages have increased in recent years. Thanks to the so-called Munich allowance and a labor market allowance, there is a starting salary of over 3500 euros gross for newly trained educators.

Another topic made headlines: Parents have to continue to pay private fees - now daycare centers are suing the city.
