Wirecard and Volkswagen: they meet in Stadelheim

The Wirecard and Volkswagen cases show that the authorities' gentle treatment of dangerous egomaniacs in the executive suite is systematic.

In the hands of the judges: The trial against ex-Audi boss  Rupert Stadler  starts at the end of September in the high-security courtroom in the JVA Stadelheim. In 2019, Stadler was in custody near Augsburg for four months.

At the end of July, Hildegard Bäumler-Hösl (57) was finally in top form. "Commercial gang fraud, breach of trust, incorrect presentation and market manipulation in several cases" listed the Munich chief public prosecutor as allegations against ex-Wirecard boss Markus Braun (50) and other managers. She had Braun arrested for the second time, and two other suspects.

The press release on two closely described pages reads as if someone has finally lost patience. The "intensive investigations" had shown that "the alleged facts should be expanded considerably". Braun, three other accused and other accomplices had agreed in 2015 to inflate the balance sheet total and sales of Wirecard "by faking income". Braun rejects the allegations.

The head of the Munich main department for white-collar crime with a total of 44 prosecutors, who appears with resolute charm, is considered the most feared criminal prosecutor among managers. She is highly qualified, says a top defender. One should "just not try to outsmart them," warns another. "But whoever cooperates and plays with open cards can get along well with her."
