More than 300,000 deaths expected by the end of the year in the US.

A well-known coronavirus model previously cited by the White House predicts more than 317,000 deaths in the United States from covid-19 by December.

As of Friday morning, the University of Washington Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) model projects that 317,312 people may die from the disease, marking an increase in approximately 8,000 deaths from a previous model estimate projected a week ago.

The new IHME estimate suggests the US could have more than 136,000 additional deaths between now and December, and the daily death rate could rise to more than 2,000 per day.

However, IHME researchers noted on their website on Thursday, when they updated their model, that "if the use of masks in public increases to 95%, more than 67,000 lives could be saved."

Another forecast from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention puts the death toll in the United States at 200,000 by September 19.

Projections released Thursday forecast 200,292 deaths for Sept. 19, with a possible range of 195,824 to 207,269 deaths.

“Joint forecasts at the state and territory levels predict that the number of new deaths reported per week may decrease in 18 jurisdictions. Trends in the number of reported deaths going forward are uncertain or expected to remain stable in the other jurisdictions, ”the CDC says on its forecast website.

Unlike some individual models, the CDC's aggregate forecast projects only about a month. The previous joint forecast, released on August 20, projected approximately 195,000 coronavirus deaths by September 12.

Bolsonaro: Brazil's finances "will sink" if covid-19 emergency aid remains the same

By Marcia Reverdosa

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro said on Thursday that the country's public finances will "sink" if the government's scheme providing emergency coronavirus stipends to the country's poor continues in its current form.

Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, currently provides 600 reais (US $ 107) a month to the poor as emergency payment due to the pandemic, a value agreed by Congress earlier this year, despite Bolsonaro I wanted to give only 200 reais a month.

“Some people criticize me… but Brazil is accumulating a (huge) debt. (The government delivers) 50,000 million reais a month. Do you know how much that is? ”He asked.

Bolsonaro said he has given the economy minister until Friday to come up with a new plan to provide the financial assistance.

Brazil has registered more than 3.76 million cases of covid-19, with a total of 118,649 deaths, according to the country's Ministry of Health. Only the United States has registered more cases and deaths from coronavirus globally.
