An indictment was filed today (Sunday) in the Haifa District Court against a 25-year-old man from Ilut, for raping an 80-year-old blind woman in the city. The indictment filed by the Haifa District Attorney's Office states that the young man, Ahmad Khatib, broke into the elderly woman's apartment earlier this month while she was sleeping, and committed serious sexual offenses there. According to police, Khatib was previously suspected of committing sexual offenses, but no indictment was filed against him at the time.

According to the charges, on August 3, a brigade entered the lobby of the residential building around 3:30 p.m. He climbed to the roof of the building, and from there he reached the balcony of the 80-year-old. Khatib took off his shoes, entered the apartment through the open porch door, and from there reached the victim's room and closed the door. The indictment further states that Khatib tried to rape the 80-year-old, and when he failed, he performed oral sex and forced sodomy on her, while preventing her from moving. She told him she was going to the bathroom, went out of the room to the living room, woke up her acquaintance and told him that she had been raped.

At that time, according to the indictment, Khatib left the apartment barefoot and covered his face with his shirt. However, he then returned to the elderly woman's home for no apparent reason. Khatib entered the stairwell, climbed the roof of the building once more, and went down to the balcony of the apartment again and entered the living room. So, an 80-year-old acquaintance noticed him and grabbed him, while the elderly woman called the police. The acquaintance pushed Khatib from the living room to the balcony of the apartment, and ordered him to stay put. By the time police arrived, however, he had already climbed from the balcony to the roof and fled the building.

Khatib's defense attorney, Adv. Moshe Gilad, said in a conversation with Walla! NEWS that "the offenses attributed to him are serious, but the evidence is weak." He said, "He admitted that he broke into the apartment due to drug use, but denies the sexual offenses.

Advocate Gilad added that "unfortunately the rabbi in the State of Israel has a tendency to judge a person on the streets. We all talk about a state of law and a democratic state and I suggest everyone, whether serious or minor, wait for the court. This defendant deserves not to be tried in the media. "This is a public lynching and we need to stop it."

At the same time, attorneys Meirav Bar and Yossi Gimpel of the Haifa District Attorney's Office are requesting an extension of Khatib's detention until the end of the legal proceedings in his case. The hearing on this application will take place later in the Haifa District Court. Meanwhile, with the consent of attorneys Moshe Gilad, Ziv Gilad and Fathi Khatib representing the defendant, Judge Erez Porat extended his detention until a different decision is made.
