(CNN Spanish) - An 11-year-old patient, hospitalized and in intensive care in a private sanatorium in Paraguay, died this Sunday from complications caused by the new coronavirus, according to the Minister of Health Julio Mazzoleni.

“It is very unfortunate, any death hurts, but when it comes to a child, it naturally always has another connotation. Everything suggests that it is a rather rare but well described complication of covid-19, it is a condition that generally occurs thereafter and that is very similar to an inflammatory process known as Kawasaki, in the field of rheumatology ”, Mazzoleni expressed when confirming the child's death in a program on the Telefuturo television channel.

When asked if the child had any underlying disease, the minister said that he was not aware of it, although he mentioned that he did not know the details of the clinical picture.

As he explained, some patients develop covid-19, even after testing negative or may present complications when they are in the convalescent phase, and that "everything suggests that this was the case."

Mazzoleni said that there are other children hospitalized because of the coronavirus, including a 2-year-old who is in intensive care, but who is evolving favorably.

"We are in a difficult stage, possibly things are going to get worse, before they improve, but the degree of worsening or the time we spend in the worst phase will depend on the citizens," said the person in charge of the country's health policy.

Mazzoleni asked the Paraguayans to comply with the two-meter distance, wear masks, wash their hands and work in crews to combat covid-19.

According to official figures, as of Sunday noon, the total number of deaths from the new coronavirus was 294 people, and the total number of confirmed cases in the country reached 16,474 infected.
