A statue of Canada's first prime minister, John McDonald's, was toppled in downtown Montreal by protesters calling for an end to funding the police, government officials said.

According to documentation posted on social media, the incident occurred at the end of a peaceful march, when a group of people climbed on the monument and dropped the statue. McDonald's head, who served as prime minister in the 19th century, was cut off as a result. According to the Canadian network CBC, no suspects have been arrested in the act.

Calls for the disbandment of police forces have intensified across the United States and Canada in recent months following a string of violent incidents involving police officers, including the killing of black detainee George Floyd by a white police officer in Minneapolis three months ago. Protests against racism and police violence have spread to other parts of the world.

Canada itself erupted in June, after documentation was released showing a violent arrest of one of the country's indigenous leaders by police. The incident raised questions about the use of force by police in the country. McDonald has been linked to racist policies that have led to the deaths of many natives in Canada.

In recent years the McDonald's monument has been spray-painted with graffiti, and has often been covered in blood. The overthrow of the statue provoked condemnation from politicians.

"No matter what anyone thinks of John A. McDonald, destroying a monument like that is not acceptable," Quebec Prime Minister Francois LaGoll said. "We must fight racism, but destroying parts of our history is not the solution."

The new leader of the Conservative Party in the opposition, Erin Otol, said that "we will not build a better future if we corrupt our past."

McDonald was Prime Minister of Canada for 19 years, during the 1960s and 1990s. He is considered one of the fathers of the Canadian nation, but he created a racial system in which about 150 children born to their parents were taken from their parents and sent to state-funded schools. A 2015 government report said this policy, which lasted more than a century, was a "cultural genocide."

He was accused of allowing many natives to starve and disease while taking over their territories.

According to the CBC, during a demonstration in Montreal a leaflet was distributed in which McDonald was described as "a white nationalist, who planned the murder of the indigenous peoples when he created the brutal school housing system." It was further stated that after the mayor, Valerie Planet, did not act despite a petition against the statue, a group of activists decided to take care of the issue themselves.
