Prior to the meeting, Finance Minister Israel Katz called on Bar-David to "demonstrate leadership" and reach agreements on the public sector cuts program. "Recipients of high wages and high pensions in the public sector are now required to give their share in favor of the fight against Corona," Katz wrote on his Twitter account. "Ministers, MKs, judges and dayanim will also contribute their share. I expect the Histadrut chairman to demonstrate leadership and reach agreements on the issue. "

The meetings between the parties were held as part of the negotiations on the plan presented last Thursday. The finance plan includes a 10% cut for public employees whose salaries are higher than NIS 20,000 a month. For those earning a lower wage, a gradual cut of a few percent will apply, and for budgetary pension recipients, the management fee will be increased from 2% to 7%. Katz intends that the plan will take effect this October and end in December 2022, but the Histadrut opposes the current outline.
The amount of the cut in the salaries of about 700 employees in the public sector is estimated at NIS 3-5 billion. Last month, Katz presented a plan to temporarily reduce wage costs in the general public sector by NIS 15 billion a year for three years, but Bar-David rejected it.
