The Memory of the Past on Earth
, a science fiction work written by Chinese author Liu Cixin and better known as
The Three Bodies Trilogy
.
They will do it with Alexander Woo, producer and scriptwriter of series like
True Blood
or
The Terror
.
The problem of the three bodies
, the novel that opens the trilogy, is the first work not originally written in English to be awarded the prestigious Hugo Prize.
“The Liu Cixin trilogy is the most ambitious science fiction series we have ever read: it transports readers of the 1960s to the end of time, from life on our tiny blue planet to the ends of the universe.
We are looking forward to working the next few years to bring this epic to the screen, ”Benioff and Weiss say in a statement sent by Netflix.
Among the executive producers of the series are Rian Johnson, Bernadette Caulfield, Nena Rodrigue, Lin Qi, Rosamund Pike, Robie Uniacke or Plan B Entertainment, the company of Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner and Dede Garner.
The project includes the adaptation of the three novels that make up the trilogy.
Initially published serially in 2006 in
Science Fiction World
magazine
and in 2008 in book form, it is one of the most popular works of science fiction in China.
It tells how astrophysicist Ye Wenjie comes into contact with some aliens who are preparing to invade Earth.
Humans are divided between those who are open to receiving them and those who reject their arrival to the point of wanting to go to war.
From there, complications, conspiracies and various revolutions arrive.
Netflix points out that the scriptwriters and executive producers who take charge of this project are used to dealing "with sagas in which time and space play a fundamental role."
The writer of the novels will serve as executive advisor alongside Ken Liu, the English translator of
The Three-Body Problem
and
End of Death
.
"Having Cixin and Ken on the project will help preserve the essence of the books," says Peter Friedlander, vice president of Original Series at Netflix.
"I have great respect and fully trust the work of the creative team in terms of adaptation for television audiences," says Cixin in the same statement.
“My intention was to tell a story that transcended time and the borders of nations, cultures and races, a story that would make us consider the destiny of humanity as a whole.
It is a great honor as a writer to be able to experience the journey of this concept of science fiction up close and see how the number of fans around the world grows ”, he adds.
This also puts an end to the battle that various platforms had for the rights to adapt the Chinese trilogy to television.
In 2018, several American media assured that Amazon Prime Video was willing to spend 1 billion dollars to acquire the rights to produce a series that could compete in ambition with
