Last summer was hotter than average and was characterized by heat waves that have increased in frequency due to global warming, the Meteorological Service said today (Wednesday) regarding the last two months.

August was warmer than average mainly due to the previous heat wave, which prevailed in the last three days of the month.

Extreme temperature values were measured in this heat wave.

July was slightly warmer than average due to the last week of the month during which a heat wave prevailed.

On other days of the month the temperatures were usually close to average and on some days even slightly below it.

"The temperature records set by most of them in the last decade have not been broken, a decade in which the frequency of heat waves has risen, as part of global warming," said Dr. Amos Porat, director of the Meteorological Service's climate department, who summarized July-August data. But wait and see, this end of summer may come as a surprise. "

Daytime temperatures in August were above average by 0.5 to 1 degree. In the northern valleys and in the Arava they were slightly higher. At night, temperatures in the north and center of the country were above average by 0.5 to Up, and in the south of the country they were less than 0.5.

In the heat wave of the last three days of August, it was very hot and dry in some areas such as the Jordan Valley, the Sea of Galilee and the Hula Valley with 46-43 degrees, the Southern Golan and Lower Galilee with 42 to 44 degrees, and the Jerusalem area with 39 to 40 degrees. Ranges from 10% to 15%.

In other areas of the country the temperatures were less high, but they were accompanied by relatively high humidity - in the lowlands and in the northern Negev 35 to 37 degrees with a relative humidity of about 45% to 50%, in the coastal plain 32 to 34 degrees with a relative humidity of about 60% to 70 And in the coastal strip 31 to 32 degrees with a relative humidity of 75% to 80%.

In a small number of stations in the northeast of the country, the temperature records of August were broken during the heat wave (Yavniel, Tavor), but most of the stations did not break the temperature records of the month.

It should be noted, however, that heat waves with similar or higher temperature values have been received more frequently in recent years than in the past - in the last decade there were more significant heat waves in August, 2015 and 2010, while in previous decades such events were very rare.

This fact is consistent with the assessment that following global warming there is an increase in the frequency and intensity of heat waves.
