US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced today (Wednesday) the imposition of sanctions on the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court in The Hague Pato Bensuda.
This is due to the investigation of possible war crimes committed by American forces in Afghanistan.
Pompeo said sanctions were also imposed on Pakishu Mochuchoku, another senior official in the criminal court, following the approval given by President Donald Trump in June.
Senior officials will be banned from traveling to the United States and their assets in the country, if any, will be frozen.
"Today we are taking another step because the tribunal continues, unfortunately, to focus on the Americans," Pompeo told reporters.
He warned that individuals and entities that continue to support the work of the two may be included in the list of sanctions as well.
The decision comes as the panel of judges in the Hague tribunal is set to decide in the coming days whether to authorize the foundation to open an investigation against Israel and Hamas regarding the war in Gaza and against Israel regarding construction in settlements in the West Bank.
