The Bolivian Attorney General has filed a complaint against former President Evo Morales with the International Criminal Court in The Hague for crimes against humanity.
Morales, who ruled from 2006 to 2019, instigated his supporters in August this year to block roads and cut off several cities in the South American country from the supply of food and medical oxygen as well as access to doctors, the prosecutor said on Friday.
At least 40 patients died because of a lack of care.
The prosecution of the International Criminal Court should now initiate preliminary investigations.
The 60-year-old Morales is currently living in exile in Argentina after resigning under pressure from the military in November 2019.
The opposition and international election observers accused the first indigenous head of state of the Andean state fraud in the presidential election.
An interim government is currently in charge in Bolivia.
Morales has already been charged with terrorism and financing terrorist activities in his home country.
He is also being investigated for an alleged relationship with a minor.
