The number of transgender people murdered in Brazil has risen by 70% in the past year - according to a study, according to which the South American country is the most dangerous in the world for transgender people.
According to the National Association of Transvestites and Transsexuals (ANTRA), a local organization of activists, 129 transgender people have been murdered since January - more than the number of murders in 2019 as a whole.
The number of transgender people who committed suicide in the first six months of 2020 is 16, a third higher than in the same period last year.
"The forecast is bleak," said Bruno Benavides, a transgender activist and author of the research report.
"The death of transgender people began long before the trigger was struck. It is in insults, evictions from homes, lack of job opportunities and in school, where gender is never talked about," she added in an interview with Reuters.
Brazil has taken several steps forward on transgender rights over the past few years.
The Supreme Court ruled last year that transphobia and homophobia are criminal offenses.
In addition, the court allowed transgender people to change their names and gender in official documents, without performing sex reassignment surgery.

Despite legal recognition, members of the Brazilian community face prejudice and widespread violence in the conservative country, where strong evangelical churches are vehemently opposed to LGBT rights. The country, home to some 200 million people, is regularly ranked as one of the most dangerous in the world for transgender people.
Community rights activists say prejudice has spread under far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, who regularly opposes "gender ideology", a conservative phrase used to condemn progressive ideas about gender and gender. "Action, in any manipulation against the 'gender ideology' avenue," Benvides said.

Many transgender people are left without work or trapped in homes that are hostile to them and abused during the closure.
According to the country's Ministry of Health, 4.15 million people were diagnosed in Brazil, third in the world, and about 126,000 people died, and more cases were diagnosed in the United States alone.
A survey published in June found that a quarter of Brazilian LGBT people lost their jobs during the epidemic, and that the unemployment rate among Brazilian LGBT people is almost double the national unemployment rate.
“This whole scenario creates a process of patients due to the lack of public policy to prevent suicides and transphobic violence,” Benavids said.
The report, published last Monday, is based on murders reported on local networks, social networks and various groups.
However, the authors of the report believe that the true number may be much higher.
