During a televised press conference Thursday, the president of the Authority, Lachine Ibrahim, declared that the two rounds of the legislative elections will take place on October 24 and 25, then on November 7 and 8, according to the newspaper's website. government al-Ahram.

For the millions of Egyptians in the diaspora, the vote will take place from October 21 to 23 and from November 4 to 6.

The results will be announced on November 1 and 15.

The mandate of the current Parliament, elected in 2015, will come to an end in January 2021. Although it is officially endowed with important prerogatives, critics have for years denounced the very reduced role of the chamber - which does not matter. more than an insignificant block of opposition - in public debate and political decision-making.

Egypt last month elected its Senate in a ballot won largely by supporters of the president and marked by low turnout.

Previously an Advisory Council, the Senate was re-established in 2019 through a constitutional reform that also provides for the possible retention in power until 2030 of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

At the end of August, the Elections Authority announced that it would seize the prosecution in order to bring to justice the 54,000,000 Egyptian voters - more than half of the country's population - who abstained from voting in the senatorial elections. .

Although it risks remaining a dead letter, such an announcement is highly symbolic in a country where the opposition, Islamic as liberal, is strictly muzzled.
