His video on Instagram caused quite a stir: An extreme athlete separates the spirits with his jump in a "wingsuit" from the Mittenwald top four.
A wingsuit jump from the top of four near Mittenwald causes excitement.
Such jumps are actually forbidden in Germany.
The police and mountain rescue services are more cautious.
Mittenwald
- An Instagram video separates the spirits in
Mittenwald
.
It shows a daring
wingsuit flight
from the
Viererspitze
(2053 meters), completed this summer - just past the
Karwendel
.
While some admire the spectacular pictures, others
focus on
risk and breaking the
law
.
Because
flying from mountain peaks in a
wingsuit
is forbidden in Germany - as is
base jumping
.
Wingsuit jump from the top of the four: Approval would probably not have been granted
If you still can't leave it, you can theoretically get an exemption.
The first contact persons are the
Association of German Object Jumpers
(VDO), the
German Parachuting Association
and the
German Air Traffic Control
.
Because
base jumpers
and
wingsuit pilots
are by definition people with aerial sports equipment who make an outland landing.
As such, they require a
permit
from the owner of the take-off and landing site, a site
survey
from an expert and
liability insurance
for any damage;
only then will they be given the permission to take the planned jump at a certain date.
And that brings you to the "theoretical"
issue of
the
exemption
.
"
This procedure is not realistic
for a
mountain peak
," explains the extreme athlete who recently
jumped
from the
top of four
and does not want to be named.
“It is designed for jumps from buildings.
The VDO also has experts for this.
A
lot is different in the
mountains
. ”During the ascent, it is often decided at short notice whether a cliff or steep face can be jumped, and wind and weather conditions are often not foreseeable in advance.
“The
approval process
is therefore impractical for athletes like me,” explains the man in his mid-thirties, who
caused a sensation
with his flight show along the
Karwendel
.

Wingsuit jump in Mittenwald: mountain rescue service is diplomatic
But what does the local mountain rescue service say about the controversial
Viererspitz campaign
?
"
After
all, no permits are required
from a
climber
or
mountaineer
," says the on-call manager Heinz Pfeffer in a rather diplomatic way.
"Actually there is a free
right of access
in the
mountains
." Nevertheless, one should of course not lose sight of safety or harm others.
The greatest risk that Pfeffer and his colleagues see in this specific case is the
flight route
over the
Mittenwalder Hütte
over and near the
Karwendelbahn
.
"If the ropes are touched, or the jumper even
flies
into the
gondola
at high speed
, we quickly have a life-threatening situation for many people." Of course, one can assume that the
extreme
athletes know exactly what they are doing and try everything to avoid such scenarios.
Mittenwald: Only four tip suitable for wingsuit jump
“But in these extreme sports, the best always have accidents,” says Sepp Rieger, deputy head of operations and Heeresbergführer, referring to the
documentation
“The dark side of Red Bull” (2013).
Nevertheless, he does not
want to
allow
himself to judge the jump from the
top four
.
"In an emergency, we are only responsible for the rescue," says Pfeffer, who
would be
reluctant to
turn out to be
a
wingsuit
accident in
the most fatal outcome
,
but is not too worried about it
in the
Mittenwald area
.
“Because our region is definitely not predestined for this
extreme sport
.” In fact, only the 200-meter-high
wall of four
is probably the best option
.
The attitude at the
Mittenwald police station
is similar
.
It was there that one heard of such a jump in the region for the first time this summer.
And in general, such a case would
only become relevant
for the
police
if something happened or a violation was reported.
It can be debated for a long time
whether a flight from the
top of four
should be reported.
In
addition
to the general
ban on wingsuit flying
in Germany, the
Karwendel is
a nature reserve and
paragliding
outside of the marked areas is also prohibited there.
In Canada there are many mountains from which daredevil wingsuit fliers throw themselves (video)

Viererspitze and Karwendel are nature reserves and not wingsuit jumping areas
"The so-called hike and fly variant of
paragliding
outside of approved take-off and landing sites is always a gray area," confirms Michael Brunner, owner of the Gapa paragliding school.
“In a
nature reserve
, however, it is definitely forbidden.” Nevertheless, the question remains whether a single
mountaineer
who
climbs up
alone and sails in the air along the ridge for 30 seconds to land later in the valley actually causes more damage than the
Instagram Spot addicts
who are currently
visiting
the
Karwendel Nature Park
on the Tyrolean side in Horden and
leaving
their
mountains of rubbish
there.
Italy
,
France
and
Switzerland
answered this question with "no" and decided to work together peacefully.
Let the in relation to other
mountain sports
already very few athletes with
wingsuit
and
parachute
jump from its spectacular cliffs.
Austria
has a similar legal situation as
Germany
.
"We are probably too few to change anything here," says the aviator who
caused a stir
in
Mittenwald
with his Instagram video
.
And that although nobody saw his flight live.
That is usually the case, only
accidents
make the headlines
.
That's
exactly why he published his jump from the
top four
.
"To show that this sport has more to offer than risk and discussions about the legal situation."
Facts about wingsuit flying
Things to know about wingsuit flying and base jumping:
A
base jumper
, unlike a classic
parachutist, jumps
from a solid surface (base) - high-rise, bridge, mountain cliff - and opens the
parachute
after a certain free fall
.
Wingsuit athletes
basically do the same thing, except that thanks to a suit that mimics wings, they can stay longer in free fall or glide along slopes or ridges in it.
Some of the most spectacular, legal flights can be seen on the
Churfirsten
(Switzerland) or in
Chamonix
(France).

Not wingsuit jumpers, but ruthless mountain bikers and their legacies as well as the dog excrement in the fields annoy the farmers in the district.
And the traffic chaos caused by the tourists also bothers many residents of the region.
