Twelve Hong Kong residents were intercepted by the Chinese maritime police when they were suspected of absconding to Taiwan, including Li Yuxuan, a member of the "Hong Kong Story" who was released on bail in violation of the National Security Law. They are currently detained at the Yantian District Detention Center in Shenzhen, but have not been arranged to meet with a lawyer. US State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus followed the situation of 12 Hong Kong residents on Twitter earlier, describing them as Democracy activists and saying that their arrest is another example of the deterioration of the human rights situation in Hong Kong. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying retorted on Twitter today (13th) that 12 people were arrested for illegally crossing the border and trying to separate Hong Kong from China.

Hua Chunying reposted Ortagus' post on Twitter and wrote: "Seriously? Fact check: The 12 people were arrested for illegally crossing the border at sea. They are not pro-democracy activists, but are trying to split Hong Kong from China. Get out."

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo issued a statement on September 11 referring to the incident, saying that the United States is deeply concerned about the detention of 12 Hong Kong democratic social activists in Guangdong Province.

Pompeo said that the arrested Hong Kong people were denied access to lawyers, and the authorities did not provide information about the welfare of the arrested persons, nor did they disclose the charges against them.

Pompeo said that the United States questioned Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Carrie Lam’s commitment to protecting civil rights and urged the authorities to ensure that the arrested are treated by due process.

The statement mentioned that 12 Hong Kong residents were arrested off the coast of Hong Kong about two weeks ago.
