A spokesperson for the Centre for Health Protection said that food poisoning caused by eating mushrooms is generally acute. Symptoms usually include intestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain within a short period of time after eating.

Depending on different mushroom species, patients may also experience profuse sweating, hallucinations, coma or other neurological symptoms and liver failure. In severe cases, death is more likely to occur.

The spokesman added that members of the public should buy mushrooms from reputable and reliable suppliers. They should not buy mushrooms that are suspected of being mixed with unknown species. They should also refrain from picking wild mushrooms for food because it is difficult for the public to distinguish whether these mushrooms are suitable for consumption.

The spokesman reminded that mixing inedible or toxic mushroom varieties with edible mushroom varieties will not dilute the toxicity. In most cases, cooking will not destroy its toxicity.

The centre reminds that citizens who suspect food poisoning caused by eating mushrooms should seek medical advice immediately.

If there are remaining mushrooms, you should take them to seek medical advice for identification.
