Member of Parliament for Dover (south) from 2010 to 2019, Charlie Elphicke, 49, was convicted at the end of July of three counts of sexual assault, for having assaulted a woman in her thirties in 2007 at his home and an employee parliamentarian in his twenties twice in 2016.

Charlie Elphicke was first suspended from the Conservative Party in November 2017, when sexual assault charges emerged, before being reinstated in December 2018 by Prime Minister Theresa May shortly before a vote of no confidence was held against she.

After his indictment in 2019, Charlie Elphicke was once again suspended, further reducing the very small majority of the ruling party in Parliament, in the midst of turbulence over Brexit.

It was his wife Natalie Elphicke who succeeded him in his constituency in the legislative elections of December 2019.
