A new patent in the medical field added to the achievements of national cadres. It was registered by the Syrian doctor Ali Ibrahim Mahmoud, a specialist in bone and soft tissue oncology in (the fabrication of the tumor shoulder joint), the first of its kind at the level of Syria.
This achievement is characterized by its low costs compared to the types manufactured abroad, where the cost of the materials used in the manufacture of the local joint does not exceed 500 thousand Syrian pounds, which allows the treatment of many patients who need a joint fitting as a result of military injury, accidents, tumors and other conditions. It thus contributes to the improvement and continuation of their lives naturally.
After Dr. Mahmoud successfully applied shoulder joint replacement operations with the new local technology, and more than 15 patients benefited from it in a number of governorate hospitals, most of them were at Al-Biruni University Hospital in Damascus, he obtained a patent registration document in his name from the Commercial and Industrial Property Protection Directorate in the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection.
In a statement to the SANA delegate, Dr. Mahmoud said that the idea of local manufacturing of the shoulder joint during surgery is based on the technique of placing a (metal skewer) appropriate in length and diameter with lower and upper screws as needed with the manufacture of a humeral head of medical cement according to the loss occurring, whether in neoplastic, inflammatory or traumatic injuries. It is fused within the bone marrow and fills the void obtained almost naturally compared to the normal joint in terms of position and size, and achieves the required stability for all surrounding muscles by making tunnels for these muscles.
He added that the shoulder joint replacement operation after its excision due to a military injury, accident or tumor has become difficult due to the conditions of the terrorist war on Syria and the economic sanctions that have caused difficulty in securing foreign artificial joints, the long waiting period for their arrival and their high financial costs, which required thinking about finding a local alternative, especially The shoulder joint fitting does not require high-tech techniques, as is the case with weight-bearing joints such as the hip, knee and ankle.
He pointed out that the joints manufactured abroad, although they are characterized by flexibility, smoothness and durability, but the local joint technique is also characterized by being less weight as this prevents the occurrence of osteoporosis in the place of replacement and also provides capacity in the options of fixation and return each muscle to its appropriate place in addition to its appropriate functional effectiveness in addition to To the big financial difference it saved.
Mahmoud holds a PhD in orthopedic and soft tissue tumor surgery from Damascus University in 2013 and obtained a specialist degree in orthopedic tumor surgery from the Ritzoli Institute in Italy in 2010 and two certificates in microsurgery from Egypt in 2008-2009 as well as transferring expertise in orthopedic and soft tissue tumors applied in countries Advanced to Syria, such as vascular splint transfer, quadriceps amputation, pelvic resection, whole bone transplantation from international bone banks, and tumor joint replacement.
