The UN accuses the Maduro government of crimes against humanity

The United Nations mission in the Latin American country concludes that the Venezuelan security forces have committed "systematic violations of human rights"

Venezuelan security forces and allied groups have committed "systematic violations of human rights, including murder and torture equivalent to crimes against humanity," as determined by UN investigators on Wednesday.

Suspicions that Nicolás Maduro along with his Interior and Defense ministers ordered or contributed to serious crimes to silence the opposition have been confirmed in a report by the United Nations mission in the Latin American country.

Most of the illegal executions by state agents "have not been prosecuted in Venezuela, where the rule of law and democratic institutions have failed," they added.

The UN investigation mission has pointed out that the International Criminal Court together with other national jurisdictions, which began a preliminary study in Venezuela in 2018, should consider prosecuting those involved.

To do this, the investigators will open the database that contains the names of the officers identified by the victims.

"The fact-finding mission has found reasonable grounds to believe that the Venezuelan authorities and security forces have planned and carried out human rights violations since 2014," including killings and the systematic use of torture, "which amount to crimes against humanity ”, affirmed the president of the group, Marta Valinas.

The Maduro government has not provided an immediate response to the report, which is based on more than 270 interviews with victims, witnesses, former officials, lawyers and confidential documents.

"Far from being isolated acts, these crimes were coordinated and committed in accordance with State policies, with the knowledge or direct support of commanders and senior government officials," according to Valinas.

The group has determined that army, police and intelligence officials have committed extrajudicial executions.

One of these murders was that of the former head of the Bolivarian Intelligence Service (SEBIN), General Christopher Figuera.

The investigation team has stated that it has “reasonable grounds” to believe that the intelligence services falsified or planted evidence against the victims and that their agents have tortured the detainees.
