(CNN Spanish) -

Richard Carapaz was once again the protagonist in the Tour de France.

After his great performance on stage 18, he is now the leader of the mountain.

The Ecuadorian was close to a stage win, but preferred to celebrate with his teammate Michal Kwiatkowski.

On this occasion he was not overtaken as he was close to the goal or he failed in an early escape as happened in the two previous stages.

The 2019 Giro d'Italia winner raised his arms high alongside Kwiatkowski as they crossed the finish line in La Roche-Sur-Foron.

The Ineos team celebrated their first victory of this edition of the Tour, a day after having fired their leader and defending champion Egan Bernal due to physical problems.

Carapaz can secure the red dot jersey as early as this Friday at stage 19, which will have a fourth category port and finish flat for sprinters.
