The EPCR, the body that organizes the European Rugby Cups, had been clear: if a team is affected by more than three cases of Covid-19, it is not allowed to play and therefore has a lost match.
This is the mishap that happened on Friday at Castres Olympique which recorded four positive cases: three players and a member of the staff.
The sentence fell this Saturday.
“The EPCR has decided to cancel the Challenge Cup quarter-final match between Leicester Tigers and Castres Olympique which was to take place tomorrow (Sunday, September 20) at Welford Road, a statement from the continental body said.
This decision comes following a meeting of a medical committee made up of medical officials from the federations, leagues, and both clubs, and following subsequent independent medical recommendations. ”
And the press release from the EPCR continued: “The committee, chaired by Rod McKenzie (Scotland), met by videoconference last night (Friday, September 19) following confirmation from Castres that three members of the group of players, as well as a member of the sports team, had tested positive for COVID-19 before the team's planned departure to England. "
What consequences for the Top 14?
The decision is final: “On medical advice, it was decided that the quarter-final could not take place safely under these conditions.
Consequently, Castres Olympique must withdraw and Leicester qualify for the semi-finals of the Challenge Cup. ”
A blow for the CO who had finished first in Pool 1 of the Challenge Cup, ahead of the Welsh from Newport, the English from Worcester and the Russians from Enisey-STM.
It remains to be seen what will be the consequences in the Top 14 for Castres Olympique.
On the occasion of the 3rd day of Top 14, the CO - winner at the opening in Agen (22-26) then beaten at home by the Stade Français Paris (16-22) - must move on Sunday October 4 (7 p.m. ), on the Montpellier lawn.
