At the end of last month, 12 Hong Kong residents were intercepted by the Guangdong Coast Guard when they were suspected of absconding and fleeing the country. They are now being detained in Shenzhen Yantian District Detention Center.

In an interview with Wireless News, the Secretary for Security Li Jiachao said that 12 Hong Kong residents are in good physical condition. Two lawyers have been selected according to the list of lawyers provided by the authorities. They have also followed up the lawyers' information to the Mainland for contact with the families of the arrested.

Regarding some of the families of the arrested persons requesting the authorities to provide evidence to confirm the location and safety of the parties at the time of the incident, Li Jiachao emphasized that the SAR government has no visitation rights and may not be able to deal with it.

As for whether to provide lawyers for family members to contact, Li Jiachao, the Secretary for Security, said that the government has requested to report to local law enforcement agencies, but local law enforcement agencies must act in accordance with their own laws and regulations, emphasizing that the Hong Kong government must respect mainland practices.

Li Jiachao also believes that Hong Kong people are familiar with the common law system, that is, the legal system of Hong Kong, but foreign countries have their own laws and regulations. The Hong Kong government can only fight for the rights and interests of Hong Kong people in their laws and regulations, but cannot demand certainty. It must conform to Hong Kong's usual practice.

As for the news that five Hong Kong people were arrested on suspicion of smuggling to Taiwan in July, Li Jiachao said that he has not received a reply from Taiwan so far and can only follow up as best he can.
