A package containing ricin poison and addressed to President Donald Trump was intercepted earlier this week, government officials announced Saturday.
The deadly substance was detected at an outside facility that checks mail addressed to the White House.
An official said
the package tested positive for the poison in two different tests
: a field test and a laboratory test.
A second agent said the FBI, Secret Service and the United States Postal Inspection Service are investigating to determine where the letter came from.
Because it was intercepted in time, the letter did not reach the White House.
Other letters that also tested positive for castor oil were discovered elsewhere, according to reports, but only one was apparently addressed to a political figure.
The others were destined for prisons, according to a police official who did not say how many were found in total.
