Pyotr Ilyichov, Director of the International Organizations Department at the Russian Foreign Ministry, confirmed that the West violates the basic principles of the United Nations Charter in dealing with the events in Belarus and trying to achieve its own interests through the use of illegal sanctions.
"Unfortunately, in the case of Belarus, we see a familiar scene, as Western countries that are striking the wall with the basic principles of the United Nations Charter are trying to use the post-election situation in the country to achieve their narrow selfish interests," Russia Today quoted Ilyichov as saying in a press interview.
Ilyichov pointed out that the West, in dealing with the situation in this country, is resorting to "the usual tools, including unlawful unilateral sanctions," stressing that interference in Belarus' affairs, including through the use of the UN platform, is unacceptable and that any international assistance to it must be provided. On request only.
The European Parliament called for the imposition of sanctions on Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko and other officials under the pretext of "rigging the election results, violence and repression" against the demonstrators.
