The arrival of garbage on the beaches of Omoa is increasing.

For this reason, the government of Honduras asked Guatemala to report "immediately" the authorities' plan to "mitigate in the short term the environmental and health effects" left by the solid waste that travels through the Motagua River to the Honduran coasts.

In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Honduras presented the clean-up actions led by the Secretariat of Natural Resources and Environment in coordination with an interinstitutional table in charge of handling the problem.

For its part, the Ministry of Foreign Relations of Honduras regretted the negative impact on marine life in general and the economic losses in activities such as fishing and tourism.

For its part, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN) of Guatemala responded this Sunday with a statement, in which it reported the coordination of cleaning activities, especially in the Quetzalito area.

At the same time, MARN acknowledged that due to the increased flow in the river, the Quetzalito industrial biobarda, which began operating in January of this year, was not able to contain the waste.

In the letter, the Guatemalan government highlighted the interest of both countries in solving the problem and offered to make a field visit to the affected coastal area in Honduras, a visit scheduled for this Tuesday.
