Ammerland has always had a great fascination for artists.

Vicco von Bülow alias Loriot (1923-2011), who made Germany laugh, also lived here.

Münsing

- Bernhard-Viktor Christoph-Carl, Vicco for short, von Bülow was born in Brandenburg an der Havel in 1923.

From 1963 on, he lived with his wife Romi and their two daughters Susanne and Bettina mainly in Wimpasing in a wonderful old villa with a hipped roof.

He went for a walk with his pugs in the quiet streets of the Ammerlander district, in the Gasthof Gerer down by the lake or in the Münsinger Neuwirt he enjoyed the Bavarian cuisine.

He wrote the preface to Alma Lanzinger's book “Ammerland dazumal”.

It says: "I've been sitting at my desk in Ammerland for 42 years, captivated by the incomparable atmosphere of my second Bavarian home."

All of Germany laughed at his skits

Loriot's artistic work is extremely extensive.

From the 1950s until his death, the painter and graphic artist established himself as one of the most versatile German humorists in literature, television, theater and film.

Later he also worked as an actor, presenter, director, set and costume designer.

Famous include the male noses he created, the cartoon characters Wum and Wendelin as well as the TV sketches with Evelyn Hamann such as "Das Frückstücksei", "Auf der Rennbahn" or the "Herren im Bad".

The memorial that the Münsing community erected for its honorary citizen a few years after his death on the village square commemorates the latter: two bronze men sitting in a bathtub and from their mouths alternately a jet of water emerges as a symbol of the debate that the both lead.

Loriot's works were mainly concerned with communication disorders.

As a director, von Bülow staged the operas "Martha" and "Der Freischütz".

In 1988 he shot the feature film "Ödipussi" as author, director and leading actor, followed in 1991 by "Papa ante portas".

In his adopted home town, Loriot was not only a celebrity, he was also a citizen.

In 1989 the Münsinger recruited him as a teammate for the classic TV show "Games without Borders".

Together they won the preliminary round at Lake Starnberg and later the final in the Nibelung city of Xanten.

He protested against a landfill

Von Bülow conducted the Münsingen music band on the occasion of the beginning of the year or his round birthdays, he designed the logo for the Ammerland judo club free of charge and he even got involved politically.

At the beginning of the 1990s, he and many others protested against the threatened landfill in Reichenkam.

In 2005 he wrote a letter to the community appealing to curb the building frenzy in Wimpasing so that there would be no “slurry” there.

As a thank you for the fact that the local councils put a stop to the further densification of the villa district with a development plan, he gave them all a cartoon that he had drawn himself in 2008.
