Storm in Greece: devastation also on vacation islands
On Friday afternoon, Greece's north-south rail link between
Athens
and
Thessaloniki
even had to be
closed
due to a
flood
, as the state broadcaster (ERT) reported.
In many regions of
western Greece there
was also a power cut.
The
schools
were also partially closed there.
The
ferry connections
to the islands of
Kefalonia
,
Zakynthos
and
Ithaca
were interrupted.
A campsite on the holiday island of
Kefalonia
even had to be evacuated.
Time and again, emergency services had to move out to free people from their
flooded houses
.
More than 5,000 homes are
reported to have
been flooded.

from the badly affected city of
Karditsa
in Thessaly told the Greek TV station Skai: "We used to have storms, but never as violent." She was up to her waist in the
water
.
Another
older man
fought back tears in an interview on the state radio: “I'm going to see if I can still save something.
The basement is full of water.
Everything I own is in my house. "
