After the coup in Mali, the military junta announced a new interim president.
Former Defense Minister Bah N'Daw will be sworn in for 18 months on Friday, the junta's leader Assimi Goïta said on state television.
Goïta himself will therefore take over the post of Vice President.
The duo is supposed to rule the country temporarily until elections.
70-year-old N'Daw has held several high-profile roles in the military in the past.
The previous president of the West African crisis country, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, was overthrown in mid-August.
Since then, a military junta has ruled the country, in which Bundeswehr soldiers and German police officers also take part in UN and EU missions to stabilize the terror-ridden region.
The regional alliance of states, Ecowas, imposed sanctions on Mali after the coup and put pressure on the junta to immediately appoint a civil interim president and premier.
Ecowas also wants a transition period of no more than 18 months.
