The judge at the US Supreme Court, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on Friday, is to be commemorated with several ceremonies in the capital Washington.

According to the Supreme Court, a private memorial service with Ginsburg's family, friends and other judges will first take place on Wednesday.

Some Ginsburg employees are supposed to receive the coffin in front of the court and then carry it.

According to the court, this is in line with tradition.

The same procedure was chosen after the deaths of the former judges John Paul Stevens and Antonin Scalia.

Unlike in previous deaths, Ginsburg's body should not be laid out in the Great Hall of the Court, but under the pillar porch because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Here citizens can pay their last respects to the lawyer on Wednesday and Thursday for two days and say goodbye.

Trump doubts Ginsburg's last wish

On Friday, the coffin is to be transferred to the Capitol, where, according to the Democratic spokeswoman for the House of Representatives, a private mourning ceremony will also take place.

Only next week Ginsburg will finally be buried in the Arlington National Cemetery at the gates of the US capital.

US President Donald Trump announced that he would nominate a successor to Ginsburg for the weekend.

"I think it will be Friday or Saturday," Trump told Fox News.

However, Trump also said he would wait until after the funeral.

The US president wants to propose a woman to succeed Ginsburg.

Trump also expressed doubts that it was Ginsburg's last wish not to be replaced until a new president was in office.

According to the broadcaster NPR, the judge is said to have made a corresponding statement to her grandson Clara Spera a few days before her death.

Trump said on Fox News that he did not know if Ginsburg said that or if it was formulated by his Democratic counterparts in Congress, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer and Adam Schiff.

"I would rather tend to the second," said Trump.

Ginsburg was a Supreme Court judge for 27 years and was considered a liberal icon of the USA.

She died on Friday at the age of 87 from complications from pancreatic cancer.

The lawyer was appointed Supreme Court judge by then US President Bill Clinton in 1993 and was extremely popular with many Americans, among other things because of her commitment to women's rights.

Her death could dramatically change the balance of power in the Supreme Court just before the presidential election on November 3rd.

Of the nine seats in the Supreme Court, only three are now held by Liberals.
