The kidnapping and sexual assault took place on Sunday in a residential area of Villiers, a village of 950 inhabitants where the child lives and is educated, 20 km north-east of Poitiers, said to a correspondent for the AFP Mayor Joël Doret.

The attacker in the car, a priori outside the town, would have approached the girl, while she was going on foot to get bread, he said.

The child, who was raped, was quickly found and taken care of at the Poitiers University Hospital, but his attacker was still wanted on Monday, said the Poitiers prosecutor's office, confirming information from France 3 Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

A hundred gendarmes from several units, supported by a helicopter, were mobilized on Sunday in the early hours of the investigation in an immediate intervention plan (ex-Epervier), initially triggered in three departments - Vienna, Deux-Sèvres, and Maine-et-Loire - a device that has since been lifted.

The investigation is actively continuing, led by the gendarmes of the Poitiers research section.
