A guarantee control court in Bogotá sent the case against the former president of Colombia Álvaro Uribe Vélez, for alleged bribery and procedural fraud, back to the Supreme Court of Justice.

In this way, the former senator will continue in home detention, a measure that he has been in since August 4.

Uribe Vélez has always denied the accusations against him.

Now, the Supreme Court must define the law that applies to continue with the process against Uribe.

On September 1, the Supreme Court of Justice of Colombia announced that it was leaving the investigation against former President Álvaro Uribe at the disposal of the Attorney General's Office.

Through a statement, he reported that the decision was due to the conduct investigated is not related to his position as a congressman.

Precisely, Uribe resigned his seat in Congress in mid-August, through a letter posted on Twitter.

The resignation was known days after the house arrest issued by the Supreme Court of Justice on August 4, in the middle of the investigation for alleged procedural fraud and bribery of witnesses, became effective.

In his letter to the president of the Senate, Uribe argued the reasons for the resignation.

"The security measure with house arrest, with the violation of eight procedural guarantees, with illegal and malicious interceptions (...) nullify any expectation of being able to return to the Senate," he said.

And he added: "I hope that Colombia recovers from so many difficulties without putting liberties at risk."

The case against Álvaro Uribe for alleged bribery and procedural fraud

The case for alleged bribery and procedural fraud against Álvaro Uribe dates back to a trial for alleged manipulation of witnesses.

In that case, Uribe went from complainant to complainant.

In 2012, the former president sued Congressman Iván Cepeda.

Uribe considered that Cepeda was manipulating false witnesses.

He also accused him of offering legal benefits to former paramilitary prisoners to link him to these armed groups.

From the beginning, Cepeda denied Uribe's allegations and defended his innocence.

In February 2018, the Supreme Court made a decision on the case.

It ruled in favor of Cepeda and announced that it would investigate Uribe for cases of false witnesses.

Uribe gave an investigation before the high court in October 2019.
