The number of coronavirus deaths in the United States today (Tuesday) exceeded 200,000, more than any other country in the world, by a considerable margin, and about one-fifth of all global deaths.

According to a Reuters calculation, the average number of deaths per week in the United States is about 800.

The daily peak was on April 15, when 2,806 people died from the virus.

In the first months of the epidemic, the number of 200,000 dead was perceived by many as the maximum threshold in the United States.

"The thought of 200,000 dead is very depressing, and in some respects unbelievable," Dr. Anthony Pauchi, the United States' top epidemic expert, told CNN. But he expressed concern that in some parts of the country the measures for maintaining public health are not being implemented.

Yesterday, Republican President Donald Trump claimed he had done a "phenomenal job" against the virus, which was diagnosed among some 6.9 million Americans.

"It's actually not affecting anyone," Trump argued, without foundation, at an Ohio election rally last night.

"It mainly affects adults with heart problems and other problems."

The president admitted in an interview with journalist Bob Woodward that he deliberately downplayed the severity of the virus at the start of the outbreak because he did not want to "create panic."

With less than a month and a half to go until the Nov. 3 election, Trump lags behind his Democratic opponent Joe Biden in all major national polls, and they are head-to-head in several key states.

Trump's treatment of the plague and the economic blow that followed have hurt his support among many voters.
