The School Curriculum Review Task Force established by the Education Bureau today (22nd) released the final report on the New Senior Secondary Curriculum, suggesting that the arrangements for the four core subjects of the senior secondary curriculum remain unchanged, and the general education subject to compulsory examinations.

Regarding the Chinese Language subject, the team recommends reviewing the assessment model of the subject, including but not limited to deleting, simplifying or merging the current speaking and listening examination papers.

The group quoted the submissions from the consultation period, and some commented that the speaking and listening papers should be canceled, which means that Mandarin will replace Cantonese as the medium of instruction. The group refuted this statement as "a guess without evidence."

The group stated that the language of instruction policy is not within the scope of the task force, and the above preliminary recommendations will not change the language of instruction of the Chinese subject.

The chairperson of the School Curriculum Review Task Force Chen Huang Lijuan (fifth from left) submitted a review report to the Secretary for Education, Yang Runxiong (sixth from right) on September 22.

The School Curriculum Review Task Force released its final report today. It mentioned that 112,000 submissions were received during the consultation period, of which about 102,000 were model submissions. For Chinese subjects, the main comment was against the cancellation of the HKDSE hearing And talk volume.

The content of the report stated that the task force agreed that reading, writing, listening, and speaking abilities are important to students, but since the curriculum reform in 2001, Chinese and English subjects, as well as other different subjects and diverse learning experiences, have provided students with substantial improvements Opportunities for listening and speaking skills in two languages.

Therefore, the group believes that the reduction of the listening or speaking papers for the Chinese subject of the HKDSE will not reduce the opportunities for students, especially the majority of students whose mother tongue is Cantonese, to use Chinese skills.

The group quoted some opinions, saying that the current speaking assessment mode of public examinations makes candidates vulnerable to other candidates in the same room, and therefore fails to truthfully reflect the speaking ability of candidates.

The task force maintains the recommendations for reviewing the assessment model of the subject, including but not limited to deleting, simplifying or merging the current speaking and listening examination papers. The relevant details will be submitted to the Education Bureau, the Curriculum Development Council and the HKEAA according to the current mechanism. In.

The School Curriculum Review Task Force established by the Education Bureau recommends reviewing the Chinese language assessment model, including but not limited to deleting, condensing or merging existing speech and listening examination papers.

In addition, the group recommends that the authorities set up an expert group to review how to strengthen the study of Chinese literature and classics in the course, appreciate classic chapters and masterpieces, so as to promote Chinese culture and absorb the elements of character, affection and beauty in the works.

There are chapters in the report to clarify misunderstandings. It emphasizes that the abolition of listening and speaking papers for Chinese subjects has nothing to do with replacing Cantonese as the medium of instruction.

The group report stated that the above proposal is to modify or reduce the public examination listening and speaking papers, but many model submissions submitters believe that the cancellation of the relevant papers means that Mandarin will replace Cantonese as the language of instruction. The group refutes the relevant allegations. It's a speculation without evidence."

The group emphasized that the language of instruction policy is not within the scope of the task force and has not been discussed.

The group also pointed out that teachers and schools can choose to use Cantonese or Putonghua as the language of instruction in the Chinese language, which is not affected by the retention and abolition of listening and speaking files.

Therefore, the group emphasized that the above-mentioned preliminary recommendations will not change the language of instruction for Chinese subjects. At present, candidates for Chinese subjects of the HKDSE can already choose to take Cantonese or Putonghua in speaking test papers.

The task force emphasized that the abolition of listening and speaking papers for Chinese subjects has nothing to do with the replacement of Cantonese as the medium of instruction.

The group believes that there are many opportunities for students in different subjects to make presentations in Cantonese and interact with peers in group discussions. Therefore, the proposed revision of the Chinese language assessment model will not reduce the oral expression ability of local high school students .

Regarding the changes to the remaining subjects, the team believes that the current HKDSE English subject provides deep and shallow parts in the test papers to cater for the diversity of students. It is generally supported by the academic community. Therefore, there is no need to further reduce and change the test papers. The task force believes that this subject needs to be changed. The scale of the changes is small.

The group recommends that the school-based assessment arrangements for English subjects be further streamlined, and how to write papers in the HKDSE should be reviewed for more effective assessment of electives.

The task force understands that the Education Bureau is studying the feasibility of providing vocational English courses at the senior secondary level, and the academic community generally supports this proposal.

Regarding mathematics, there are suggestions to combine Unit 1 and Unit 2 of the extended part into a higher-level mathematics subject. The task force recommends that the Education Bureau and the HKEAA work with the Curriculum Development Council to further study the long-term use of "Advanced Mathematics (named To be determined)” to replace the feasibility of the existing extension part to meet the needs of students who have a strong interest in mathematics.

Curriculum Review Advocating General Studies IES Elective Group: Catering for the Diversity of Students to Promote Whole Person Development

Chairperson of the Curriculum Review Group: I am sure that the cancellation of the Liberal Studies course or "only taking but not taking the exam" is not feasible

The Curriculum Review Team advocates reducing the content of core subjects in general education, not doing special investigations, and only getting the highest level 4

The task force also recommends that applied learning be further promoted to provide valuable high school elective subjects, including the implementation of applied learning earlier than Form 4, and to allow students to complete a two-year applied learning course at Form 5, so that students can reach Form 6 Level, focus on studying other diploma exam subjects, or exploring personal interests.

In addition, the group recommends to relax students' study of applied learning as a funding application qualification for the fourth elective subject, so as to encourage students with better abilities to choose.

For those with stakes, it is recommended to raise the applied learning performance level in the HKDSE of "Up to the Standard and Outstanding Performance (II)" to Level 4 or higher, thereby increasing the incentives for electives. The group believes that based on the principle of fairness, this recommendation is practical in operation difficult.
