This work of art causes a stir in Oberammergau.

The place, known for traditional Lüftlmalereien, has a piece of street art.

The reactions were not long in coming.

Oberammergau

- It rattles when he shakes the can.

A bullet hits the inside wall of the spray can.

Then the distinctive "Pffff" can be heard.

A couple of people from Oberammergau stop and watch.

These noises are new in the Passionsort, where walls have been decorated with works of art for centuries.

But actually with a brush and paint.

Really quiet.

Less with a gas mask and spray can - and "Pffffff".

At the Mühlbach, opposite the parish church of St. Peter and Paul, stands a man with a gas mask on a house wall.

He shakes and sprays without a break.

"Lapiz" is the name of the artist.

This is Spanish and means pencil.

The 41-year-old does not reveal his real name.

Lapiz has been Lapiz since he lived in Argentina many years ago and started spraying paint on buildings there.

Now the man from Hamburg is in Oberammergau and is spraying a guy in leather pants, a red traditional shirt, red straps and a pink feather on a green hat on a house wall.

Retailer wants graffiti for house wall in Oberammergau

The retail salesman Günter Kastner-Wagenpfeil booked him a good two months ago.

He wanted a graffiti for the facade of his terracotta-colored house on Mühlbach in Oberammergau.

A real street art work of art.

A challenge for Lapiz.

Until then he had only known the place from stories.

Lüftlmalerei was a foreign word.

"I first had to look on the Internet to see what that actually meant," says Lapiz with a laugh.

He then came to Ammertal himself.

Checked out the traditional artwork.

Was enthusiastic.

“That's really great.” The artist made a sketch together with Kastner-Wagenpfeil.

His client had a clear idea of the picture that should adorn his facade in the future.

Street art in Oberammergau: boy is dressed in Bavarian fashion

So that his work of art is not perceived as a complete foreign body in the place, the man from Hamburg has given the depicted boy a Bavarian dress.

"If I had done the same thing in the Hanseatic city, the boy would probably have looked different."

For a good four days he cut paper for paper.

The stencil made for the graffiti.

The main work for him.

The spraying itself then takes "only ten hours and is the most fun".

In the beginning the artist had concerns, he admits that.

He was warned that such modern graffiti could also cause trouble in the conservative Oberammergau.

"I was told not to be surprised if someone insulted me while spraying." Nobody did, the opposite happened.

Until it was completed, countless curious people came up to him, took photos and asked questions.

"They liked what they saw there."

Artwork on the house wall also has a message

The artwork was unveiled at Kastner-Wagenpfeil's birthday party on Friday evening.

The echo was not long in coming.

Already early in the morning on Sunday guests and locals queued in front of the house to see the wall.

Of course, a work of art should not only be beautiful, but also convey a message.

The sentence "The charm and beauty of life are made up of light and shadow" has a deeper meaning for the silver goods retailer.

Negative and positive can be drawn from it.

“Exactly how art should be,” he says.

“It is supposed to polarize.” The shadow of the boy in costume has the shape of a wolf.

A very topical topic.

“The animal is often viewed negatively,” says Kastner-Wagenpfeil.

“The bad wolf.” But it is also a familiar pack animal, almost exterminated by humans.

Dogs are also descended from him.

"As is well known, man's best friend."
