Reichersbeuern

- Pets are very popular in Germany.

The inevitable death of a loved one is a far-reaching affair for many people.

Simply handing it over to the carcass disposal is reluctant to many owners who have built and maintained an emotional relationship with their pet over the years.

But where to put the dead animal body?

According to the Animal Body Disposal Act, burial on your own property is permitted for smaller animals such as dogs or cats.

They must be dug deep enough and the property must not be in a water or nature reserve.

Burying the carcass in the forest is prohibited.

Only smaller pets can be disposed of in the residual waste bin.

For many pet owners, it is unthinkable to bring their companion, which has often been around for decades, to an animal disposal facility.

One possibility to bury the animals in a dignified manner - horses and donkeys have also been possible for three years - is to cremate them in an animal crematorium.

Capacity of up to 20 small animals and two horses per week

The Reichersbeurer municipal council had to deal with this topic in its most recent meeting on Friday evening.

The company Tiertrauer Wolf from Bad Tölz had made an application for a change to the development plan “earthworks, building rubble recycling, biogas plant and biomass storage” in the Kranzer district.

Christian and Susanne Wolf, who presented their plans at the meeting, want to build a plant for burning pets and horses south of the biogas plant.

The approximately six meter high and 25 by 15 meter building is to be erected in a container design.

It contains a combustion chamber for horses and one for smaller pets.

The small animal furnace has a combustion output of 50 kilograms per hour.

In the case of horses, cremation takes six to eight hours.

Christian Wolf anticipates a capacity of around ten to 20 small animals and two horses per week.

The animals are brought or picked up, strongly refrigerated in order to interrupt the decomposition process and incinerated within two days.

"It burns a little when the system is in operation", admitted Susanne Wolf when asked about the odor nuisance, but at the same time pointed out the installation of filters.

Incidentally, this has nothing to do with the odor nuisance when the carcass disposal is picked up, said Christian Wolf.

Ashes can be spread over a suitable plot of land

Biogas from the neighboring plant would be used for combustion.

In most cases, the ashes of the animals are returned to the owners.

But they can also be scattered on a suitable, attractive piece of land, which has yet to be found.

So far, small animals have been driven to Oberschleißheim for cremation.

The only animal crematorium for horses in southern Germany is in Schwäbisch Hall.

In Baden-Württemberg, about 350 kilometers away, Tiertrauer Wolf has already brought ten horses to be cremated this year.

For energetic reasons alone, a facility in the southern Bavarian region would make sense, especially since the tendency for cremation is increasing.

“We want to stay regional.

The need is there, ”explained Susanne Wolf.

The Reichersbeurer municipal council would have liked the company to be located in the municipality for tax purposes.

Nevertheless, they decided with 9: 5 votes to change the development plan.
