The holiday season is somehow the unofficial "bedding season", a combination of season changes, gift tags and the search for holiday gifts leads many of us to ponder the bedding shelves and raise questions we are not sure we know how to answer well enough.

What is the difference between the different types of fabric, what are the benefits of each of them and what the hell is combed cotton (and who combs it?).

So that we can all better understand what we are actually purchasing, why we should pay attention, and what we should read before purchasing a new set of bedding, we have prepared the following guide with the help of Tali Bitton, founder and CEO of the Linenz and Netzer bedding brand for a long line of manufacturers Local textiles.

"The linen market is full of all kinds of fabrics: polyester, polycottana, full cotton, Egyptian cotton and combed cotton. In the Israeli weather, it is better to choose airy and breathable fabrics," Bitton recommends.

The cotton comb produces a smooth and very pleasant to the touch fabric and at the same time also very durable in the washes.

Types of fabrics

Polyester is

made of 100% nylon fiber (microfiber), a non-breathable synthetic fabric (tends to sweat in it and is therefore not recommended in the Israeli climate), unpleasant to the touch and wears out quickly.

Advantages: does not wrinkle, dries quickly and is cheap.

Polycote Another

type of fabric available on the market is a combination of polyester together with cotton fibers in a different percentage range between the two components.

Such fabrics are characterized by high durability, they are cheaper than bedding that is made of 100% cotton, but also less breathable.

Cotton

Bedding made of solid cotton, made from 100% natural cotton fibers, this fabric is considered a quality felt,

breathable, absorbs sweat that is pleasant to the touch and easily cleans in the wash.

Full cotton is very suitable for the

climate

, because it is a natural and breathable fabric.

"At Linens, we produce the bedding from 100% combed, high-quality cotton from extra-long cotton fibers that create our pleasant and unique texture," says Bitton.

But what exactly is combed cotton?

"Combed cotton is cotton that has been combed during its weaving process, which ensures smooth weaving without unnecessary edges and a very soft and pleasant to the touch fabric. Says Bitton.

Softness is the hallmark of satin weaving, but it also has another advantage: it does not wrinkle.

Weaving style

Cotton weaving can be done in a number of techniques, with the weaving style affecting the visibility, weight and texture of the fabric.

Percal

is produced by weaving yarns lengthwise and widthwise - two and a half yarns at a density of 180 or more (per inch).

The percale is a pleasant to the touch and lightweight fabric, it is characterized by an airy and "crispy" feeling, but tends to wrinkle.

Satin

Weaving satin is done by the method of passing one thread over three threads and thus creating a fabric with a one-sided look with a light sheen and a matte second side.

Beyond the special look that characterizes it reminiscent of silk fabric, the hallmark of satin is the smooth touch and caressing softness of the cozy fabric that envelops upon entering the bed.

The least satin fabric wrinkles compared to other fabrics and is suitable for all seasons.

density

If you are interested in soft bedding, it is not enough to check that they are made of 100% cotton, since the density of the fabric is what determines the softness of the fabric and its quality - the denser the fabric, the higher the quality.

The density of the yarns describes the number of widths and lengths woven in a square inch of fabric.

"The higher the density, the more compact and high-quality fabric will be created that will last for a long time, wrinkle less, be washable and have a smooth, soft and pleasant touch that will be preserved for years," Bitton explains.

According to her, the most common density sold in the Israeli market is 144 threads per inch.

Prestigious fabric density starts at 180 yarns or more, but most of the time in Israel it is customary to treat a density in the range of 220-300 yarn per inch as prestigious.

"Density higher than 300 threads per inch is considered a super premium quality. At Linens, we chose a fabric density of 500 threads per inch, a particularly luxurious density that balances the level of softness and silk texture that will be praised with each wash," says Bitton.

The fiber of the fabric

The thinner and longer the cotton fibers that make up the fabric, the higher the quality of the fabric.

The thinner the thread, the longer it can be stretched to tighten and create a smoother, softer and more flexible fabric.

This is in contrast to a short fiber, which tends to split and stand out over a weak and poor quality fabric.

Pay attention to dimensions.

Finishing

In the process of making bedding, the raw fabric can be transferred, different processes that will add different qualities to the bedding, for example a process for wrinkle, softening, dyeing and more.

Dimensions

Adjusting the dimensions of the bedding to the dimensions of the bed and the mattress is also important when buying bedding.

There is a large variety of mattress sizes, which vary: width, length and thickness.

A sheet that is too small does not sit well on the mattress and may "escape". Like the size of the mattress, it is important to know the size of the blanket and the dimensions of your pillows.

In Israel, the most common size for a pillowcase is 50 by 70 cm and the most common blanket size is 220 by 200 cm.
