Clash broke out between Minister of Internal Security Amir Ohana and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit over the criteria for obtaining a firearms license - the threshold requirements for approving the possession of a private firearm.

Last night (Wednesday), Minister Ohana sent a letter to Mandelblit in which he asked for his approval to be represented by a private attorney in a petition filed in the matter with the High Court.

The organizations that filed the petition claim that the Homeland Security Ministry's weapons policy, which allows security guards to carry with them the weapons they received at work for their private homes, leads to increased violence against women and encourages the murder of women and men.

Since the establishment of the state, the determination of the criteria for licensing firearms has been under the authority of the Minister of Internal Security.

During the hearings in the petition, representatives of the State Attorney's Office informed the High Court that the state intends to change the situation so that the distinctions will be anchored in regulations that will be approved by the Knesset's Interior Committee. adding that "charge Minister anchor the criteria in the regulations will shackling management's discretion and the cumbersome process of updating the criteria without having this requirement explicit in the law."

Ohana added in a letter sent yesterday Lmndlblit that meeting held in a petition filed last month the High Court, Supreme Court justices noted that the obligation Anchoring the criteria in the regulations is the result of the Attorney General's decision.

According to Minister Ohana, "the court did not hold a hearing on the substance of the matter on the issue and hung on the fact that it is a legal decision that is not in the hands of the minister but a decision of the ombudsman."

At the request of Ohana, a meeting was convened last Wednesday with the participation of the ombudsman and representatives from the Ministry of Justice and the Israel Police. According to Ohana, at the end of the hearing, Mandelblit announced that he would not change his decision. "Legal grounds are no less solid than the 'decision' you made," Ohana wrote

.

"I believe that my position is not properly represented by the legal advice to the government on this issue. This is a clear case of disagreements in good faith on an issue that may be subject to different interpretations."

This is not the first time such a confrontation has erupted between Ohana and Attorney General Mandelblit.
