Ecuador's justice orders the capture of former president Rafael Correa

The Ecuadorian justice ordered the capture of former President Correa.

The sentence to 8 years in prison for the former president of Ecuador Rafael Correa and others prosecuted for the crime of bribery has been in full execution since this Wednesday.

The National Court of Justice confirmed to CNN that the procedural parts were notified.

The Judging Court of the National Court of Justice issued this Wednesday notifications to the National Police to proceed to the location and capture of those sentenced, including Correa and former Vice President Jorge Glas, identified as mediate perpetrators in the Bribes 2012 case- 2016.

Glas is serving a 6-year prison sentence since 2017 for the crime of illicit association linked to the Odebrecht bribery scheme.

The former vice president is still being held in the Latacunga jail an hour and a half from Quito.

Glas has repeatedly stated that he was sentenced "without evidence."

The ruling against Rafael Correa, who has resided in Belgium since 2017, was upheld by a tribunal of the National Court after a cassation hearing on September 7.

Odebrecht corruption plot

According to the ruling, Correa and the other convicts were part of a criminal organization to illegally receive money from Odebrecht and other companies to finance their political movement in exchange for the execution of contracts for works.

The Court of Judgment of the Court of Justice asked the Electoral Council to consider that those sentenced lose their participation rights and that they are prevented from choosing and being elected in the next electoral processes in the country.

In the cases of former President Rafael Correa and former Vice President Jorge Glas, the judges also requested that the payment of their lifetime pensions be suspended.

Correa, on his Twitter account, rejected the judges' provisions and said they are "with fury and dedication."

Regarding comprehensive reparations to the State, the court ordered that the 20 sentenced persons pay about US $ 15 million within 30 days.

The ruling provides as symbolic measures that the defendants offer public apologies in the Plaza de la Independencia in Quito, the placement of a plaque in the Palacio de Carondelet and 300 hours of classes on secular ethics and transparency in public administration.
