As the relationship between the EU and China has become tense due to trade, epidemic and human rights issues, the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, stated in the general debate of the United Nations General Assembly on September 25 that the EU does not agree with China’s political and economic system. Based on the values and concerns about the Xinjiang Uyghur human rights and Hong Kong issues that the Beijing government regards as sensitive.
He also said that the relationship between Europe and the United States will last longer.
Speaking on behalf of the European Union at the General Debate of the 75th United Nations General Assembly, Michel said that Europe and the United States are deeply connected. Both have the same ideas, values and mutual feelings, and they have been strengthened in the long course of history.
These characteristics are still reflected in the vital transatlantic alliance today, but this does not mean that there will be no occasional practices or differences in interests between the two.
Michel said, "We will continue to promote respect for universal human rights, including the human rights of ethnic minorities such as Uighurs; or Hong Kong where the rule of law and democracy that we are committed to ensuring internationally are questioned."
He said that China is a key partner in coping with common challenges such as global warming, the COVID-19 epidemic or African debt relief. China is also an important trading partner. He said, "But we are determined to rebalance this relationship. To achieve greater reciprocity and fairer competition."
