The Ap Lei Chau Village Market, which was completed in 1980, had only 20 stalls in operation before the renovation, and the occupancy rate was about 47%, which was less than half. The second floor, which was the former Housing Department office, was completely empty. .

In 2018, the strong typhoon "Mangosteen" hit Hong Kong, and some of the roofs of the market were blown away, causing serious damage.

In addition to air-conditioning, the renovated market is equipped with non-slip floors, lifts and wheelchair-friendly facilities to facilitate the elderly in the area to enter and exit. To meet the needs of young residents, a small food street opened until 12 pm in the market.

As for the location on the second floor, they renovated the original office and invited restaurants to settle in, so that the neighborhood can buy seafood in the lower-level market first, and then go to the upstairs restaurant to process ready-to-eat.

They also added electronic payment equipment, set up credit card payment tools at each stall, and set up a membership system to store points and exchange gifts for neighbourhood consumption.
