It has been 140 years since the establishment of Kowloon Leshantang in 1880. From its initial mission to solving problems and donating doctors, it has been developed to today. It has been "disaster relief and relief, donation of medicines, education, education, and training for the elderly". The purpose is to serve the society.

During this period, Hong Kong has experienced many challenges, and Le Shan Tang has been through it hand in hand with Hong Kong citizens.

The origin of good karma

As early as the mid-eighteenth century, when Chinese officials visited the Kowloon Walled City, they all landed at the pier of Longjin Stone Bridge.

There is a bazaar near the pier with a "public scale".

The nearby civil goods merchants must weigh their goods here before conducting transactions. All the money from each weighing is used for donating doctors, administering medicine, and assisting in the funeral.

It was not until 1880 that this charity organization officially became a charitable organization and was named "Kowloon Le Shan Tang".

In the early days of Le Shan Tang's establishment, severe plague occurred in Hong Kong.

At that time, there were many infected people, and the corpses were everywhere, no one cared about them.

Therefore, it was the duty of Le Shan Tang to set up a righteous mound near Fei Ning Ling, Clear Water Bay Road, Sai Kung to bury the dead.

In addition, more than 20 tents have been built in the Dongtou Village area, housing more than 4,000 hospitalized patients.

At that time, Kwong Wah Hospital had not yet been completed, and Lok Sin Tong independently provided appropriate medical services to residents of the Kowloon Peninsula and the present New Territories.

The service of Le Shan Tang kept pace with the times. Seeing that most women could not go to school at that time, in 1929, the first women's free school was opened in Kowloon City District, breaking the tradition of "a woman without talent is virtue" at that time.

In the 1960s, they also opened a birthplace to reduce the number of women who had accidents.

Later, in cooperation with the Hong Kong Drug Rehabilitation Association, a drug rehabilitation registration office was set up in the loft of Le Shan Tang. Many drug addicts in the Kowloon Walled City would go to Le Shan Tang for help.

Le Shan Tang has successively opened schools, clinics and residential homes for the elderly to serve all walks of life.

In response to changes in the times and the environment, the services of Le Shan Tang have become increasingly diversified.

At present, there are more than 50 institutions under its jurisdiction, distributed throughout Hong Kong, Kowloon and New Territories.

No fear of the epidemic, Le Shantang and the grassroots join hands to tide over the difficulties

To this day, Le Shan Tang still adheres to the principle of "disaster relief, donation of medicine and medicine".

Facing the impact of the novel coronavirus epidemic in early 2020, Hong Kong had a serious shortage of epidemic prevention materials for grassroots citizens.

In view of this, Leshantang quickly established the "Leshantang Mask Bank" to cooperate with organizations and companies from all walks of life to raise epidemic prevention materials and distribute them to those in need.

As of August, more than 600,000 masks, anti-epidemic supplies and daily necessities have been distributed, benefiting more than 28,000 households from disadvantaged communities.

The clinics under its jurisdiction have also added the "New Coronavirus Deep Throat Saliva Test" service and participated in the "Enhanced Laboratory Monitoring Program" of the Centre for Health Protection to assist in community testing.

At the beginning of the year, Leshantang established the "Leshantang Mask Bank" to raise epidemic prevention materials and distribute them to people in need.

Since July, the third wave of the epidemic broke out in Hong Kong. Le Shan Tang has seen that some elderly people living in public housing estates have stayed home for fear of contracting the epidemic, and the food at home is gradually dwarfed.

Since July 17th, Lok Sin Tong has been entrusted and funded by the Home Affairs Department to distribute food packs to the elderly in Wong Tai Sin District to alleviate their urgent needs.

As of August 31, more than 25,000 food packs have been distributed to elderly people living alone or with twins.

In early August, it also cooperated with the Yau Tsim Mong District Office to deliver anti-epidemic food packages to ethnic minorities in Yau Tsim Mong District.

Le Shan Tang was also commissioned by the Social Welfare Department to visit the homes through outreach doctors to provide professional improvement suggestions on the actual situation of infection control in the homes, and to teach the staff about epidemic prevention knowledge and skills.

Le Shan Tang sincerely thanked all walks of life for providing help to our church during extraordinary times, including the kind and selfless donation and the enthusiastic support of volunteers, to jointly provide timely assistance and warmth to people in need in society.

In the face of any difficulties, Le Shan Tang promises to do its best to serve the public and help those in need.

Overcome the difficult times with the grassroots, walk through every day with Hong Kong with sincere care, implement the spirit of "caring for the true feelings and walk with kindness", and move forward hand in hand with the citizens.
