An Ifop poll on "the correct dress" of high school girls is controversial

2020-09-29T18:44:45.368Z

Ifop questioned 2000 French people, for the magazine Marianne, on what they thought to be a "correct outfit" for high school girls. The poll provoked strong reactions on social media.

After the

"republican dress"

of Jean-Michel Blanquer, the

"correct dress"

of Ifop.

On Tuesday, the Polling Institute published a survey carried out for the

magazine Marianne

which asked respondents the following question: "what is a 'correct outfit' in high school?".

The survey caused a strong reaction on social networks both by the wording of the questions and by the images used to illustrate the clothes of the high school girls.

In the midst of a debate on the rules of dress at school, provoked in particular by the words of the Minister of Education Jean-Michel Blanquer calling on high school girls to wear

"republican attire"

, this study caused an outcry.

Ifop interviewed 2000 French people by asking them the following question:

"Would you like public high schools to authorize or prohibit girls from wearing the following clothes on the premises of their establishment?"

Respondents had to give their opinion on four outfits: the

"no bra first"

, described as a

"top without a bra through which the tips of her nipples are visible"

, a

"top with plunging neckline"

then the

"crop-top"

is

"a T-shirt showing the navel"

and finally a top

"showing the straps of the bra".

Each example is embellished with drawings representing a high school student with generous and uncovered breasts.

Each time, more than half of the French surveyed wish to ban these outfits.

Ifop also asked another question on

"the unveiling of the legs of high school girls"

offering, again, four outfits: the mini-shorts, the mini-skirt, the tight dress or the jeans with holes.

According to the survey, 56% of French people questioned want to ban the wearing of mini-shorts 49% that of the mini-skirt.

"Dictatorship of the Puritans"

The publication of this survey ignited social networks.

Many political figures rose up against this study, which was deemed

"distressing".

Jean-Luc Mélenchon denounced

"propaganda polls for the dictatorship of the Puritans"

, a

"mirror effect against the freedom of women"

, according to the leader of rebellious France, when Ségolène Royal speaks of a poll

" distressing stupidity and sexism ”

, accompanied by drawings

“ reducing young girls to their breasts and their skirts and reducing young men to voyeurism ”.

The former secretary of state in charge of digital Mounir Mahjoubi was indignant against

"the trap of hypersexualization and the reification of the body of women".

The deputy of the presidential majority, Yaël Braun-Pivet, and president of the Law Commission of the National Assembly, also reacted, assuring that

"100% of women want us to leave them alone".

Since mid-September, several movements have been launched on social networks by middle school and high school girls, in particular.

On September 12, a student posted a thread about the school bullying she experienced while in college, along with the hashtag #BalanceTonBahut, which went viral.

Two days later, # monday14septembre is launched on social networks to claim the right of young girls to dress as they wish.

Initiative supported in particular by the Minister for Citizenship Marlène Schiappa.
